How to Buy Sunglasses That Protect Your Eyes

Sunglasses shield you from the sun and protect the area around the eye. The right sunglasses not only do this, but they also protect the eyes themselves. Your eyes are more vulnerable than you think. UV rays are especially harmful to the retina, which is why you should never look directly at the sun.

When buying a new pair of sunglasses, don’t only focus on aesthetics and how the sunglasses look on your face. You should also be concerned with the level of protection the sunglasses offer.  Online shopping offers many styles of protective sunglasses.

Keep the following in mind when shopping for a new pair of sunglasses:

  • Look for large lenses and wraparound styles.
  • Look for OSHA labels that state protection against UV rays.

Large lenses and wraparound styles of sunglasses prevent light from filtering into the eyes. Your sunglasses should fit firm, but not too tight. You should be able to move around substantially without your sunglasses shifting or falling off.

In addition to these styles of sunglasses and the right fit, look for sunglasses labeled with protection from UV rays. UVA and UVB rays are extremely harmful to the retina. This can cause eye damage and cause existing eye issues to become worse. Get in the habit of putting on your sunglasses every time you are in the sun. You can keep them in your purse or glove compartment of your car to ensure sunglasses that protect your eyes’ healthy are always nearby.
